Home / Debt relief / Debts we cover
What qualifies, and what doesn't
Debt relief only works on unsecured debt — balances with no collateral behind them. Here's the line between what can be enrolled and what can't.

Generally eligible
Unsecured debt
- Credit cards
Bank cards, store cards, gas cards. The most commonly enrolled category by far. - Medical bills
Hospital balances, specialist bills, and medical debt already in collections. - Personal loans
Unsecured installment loans, including some online lenders. - Collections accounts
Charged-off balances now held by a collection agency. - Some business debt
Personally guaranteed unsecured business balances, case by case.
Not eligible
Secured and protected debt
- Mortgages and auto loans
Secured by property. Non-payment means foreclosure or repossession, not negotiation. - Federal student loans
Not dischargeable this way. Federal programs exist and are free to apply for — start at studentaid.gov. - Taxes
IRS and state tax debt follow their own process. The IRS offers installment agreements directly. - Child support and alimony
Court-ordered obligations can't be negotiated privately. - Court judgments and fines
Generally outside the scope of a program.
If you're here mainly about federal student loans or tax debt, you can get help directly from the government at no cost. We'd rather point you there than enroll you in something that won't touch the balance.
